So there won’t be any little ones to make you breakfast in bed on Mother's day? No problem!
Sleep in, savour the buffets, enjoy a game of golf, or take in the attractions around town. Our list will get you going on a day that will make you feel like a Queen.
Celebrating with food is, of course, a popular way to bring people together. Whether you want to do something simple or extravagant, here are some ideas that will suit you and your family.
If casual, low key meals at home are the most comfortable for your family consider ordering in. Just remember that mothers shouldn’t be in the kitchen on Mother’s Day! Many families do order in (Mother’s Day typically the busiest day of the year for any restaurant) so plan ahead. If you’re looking to surprise her in a very special way, why not book a home service for meal preparation or house cleaning?
If your family prefers to dine out, look into the many buffet brunches served in the Edmonton area. There really is something for every type of family and budget. Buffets are also worth considering if there are picky eaters in your family. Most hotels and convention centres host special buffets on Mothers’ Day and often include a gift for the mothers.
Two popular brunch venues in Edmonton that are worth mentioning are the La Ronde and the Fantasyland Hotel. Edmonton’s only revolving rooftop restaurant offers a Mother’s Day Brunch experience coupled with unforgettable 360-views of the city. While you take in all of downtown, you can treat yourselves to an omelet station, prime rib and salmon, the dessert station, and more. The special Mother’s Day Buffet presented by Fantasy Land Hotel (West Edmonton Mall) allows you to dine within their beautiful Beverly Hills Ballroom. There are two seating times available for this event.
Instead of brunch, or as something to do after brunch, visit one of the City of Edmonton’s popular attractions. Wander the awakening spring gardens and re-opened showhouses at the University of Alberta Botanic Gardens. Try their new Patio Cafe menu and sit outside in the Leaf Pavilion or inside their newly opened Welcome Centre. Plus, mom will get a free pansy from the greenhouse!
If outdoor action is more in step with you, get your family, grandchildren or a group of other mothers together for a few hours on the greens. There are some private golf courses that require a membership to play, however, there are many other golf courses that invite non-members to try out their course. Call around in advance as the spots fill up early, particularly if the forecast predicts good weather.
If you don’t want to head out of Edmonton, you can play on one of the city’s public golf courses that include the full 18 hole Millwoods Golf Course, Riverside Golf Course and Victoria Golf Course. There are also some exceptional par three courses in the area including Rundle Golf Course.
Change your expectations of Mother’s Day. Try something different. Take advantage of the many things there are to do in Edmonton and celebrate it your way. Because after all, it is your day!
